A MAN will spend the next 27 years in jail after he was convicted of carjacking and kidnapping in the Durban Regional Court recently.

Sfundo Mfuphi, 23, arrested in 2023 in Montclair, held up a woman at gunpoint and forced her into the boot of her Honda.

According to the investigating officer, Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini, Mfuphi and an accomplice were outside Apple Day Care Centre in Woodlands when they hijacked the woman. After seizing the vehicle and locking the victim in the boot of the car, they drove in the direction of Umlazi.

“They later abandoned the vehicle, leaving the victim still locked up. She managed to escape and sought help from members of the public, who assisted in contacting the police. A case of carjacking and kidnapping was subsequently opened at the Montclair police station,” said Dlamini.

He worked diligently to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice. One of the suspects was later apprehended in Montclair while committing similar crimes. He was positively linked to the kidnapping case.

Mfuphi was denied bail and appeared in court multiple times before the sentencing.
