Health Department remains mum on Wentworth Hospital crisis

Challenges at Wentworth Hospital continue to mount as more patients call for the intervention of the KZN Health Department.

THE Department of Health remains silent on the bottlenecks hindering the proper functioning of the Wentworth Hospital.

The elected hospital committee representing the residents met with the management of the hospital on October 11 to give feedback on the memorandum given a week prior.

However, management was unable to give feedback and asked for another meeting to be scheduled.

Community march to Wentworth Hospital demanding answers

On October 1, scores of community members marched to the hospital demanding that management respond to their concerns about overcrowding and alleged negligence at the health facility. At the march, management was given an ultimatum of 48 hours to respond, which, according to the residents, was not honoured.

The frustration among community members has been mounting as they demand answers from the hospital’s management. Many patients have described distressing experiences where they felt neglected and inadequately cared for, particularly those arriving in urgent need of medical attention.

Long waiting times, with some patients waiting for hours to be seen, have further exacerbated the situation.

Hospital committee releases a joint statement

“We are pleased to inform the public that our delegation met with the CEO of Wentworth Hospital, Tiny Khanyile, and her management team to discuss the concerns and recommendations outlined in our memorandum.

“The meeting was productive, and we are encouraged by the CEO’s commitment to addressing our community’s healthcare needs. We will receive and review the hospital’s response and provide feedback and updates to the community soon.

“The committee will continue to advocate for improved healthcare services,” read the statement.

At the time of publication, the Department of Health was not available for comment.
