Sandy Cipriano, founder of Cupcakes for Hope, said the initiative is aimed to raise funds for children with cancer. The drive saw residents from The Bluff, Wentworth and Merebank eagerly get involved.

Cupcakes for Hope managed to raise R2.3 million nationwide, which will go towards supporting and treating children with cancer. “The day was a huge success, thanks to the dedication and generosity of our local communities. Every cupcake sold brought us that much closer to vital support for children in need,” she said.

The money raised will be used to help ease the financial burden that comes with a diagnosis of cancer. “In many instances, we pay monthly, sometimes weekly payments directly to healthcare providers. Volunteers also distribute care packages in hospitals to children as the funds are used to cover everything from wheelchairs to life-saving surgeries. Volunteers are caring for the children’s physical and psychological needs,” said Cipriano.

In the past year, Cupcakes for Hope responded to 2 859 financial requests, delivered 2 640 activity care bags to paediatric oncology wards throughout South Africa and gave 120 children’s birthday surprises. Cipriano said their goal this year was R2 million, and she is overjoyed to surpass it.

She made a special mention of thanks to Bluff SuperSPAR that has supported the event for the past eight years, and thanked other sponsors including Pick ’n Pay, Oxford, McNaught & Co, Sprinkle and Frosting, Itzi Bitzi and Kobus Kabs.

Cipriano also thanked the hard work of the bakers, volunteers and the First Royal Scouts.
