Tafta celebrates World Alzheimer’s and Dementia Day

Residents at John Dunn House in Wentworth were treated to an informative and fun-filled day learning about Alzheimer's and dementia.

THE Association for the Aged (Tafta) observed World Alzheimer’s/Dementia Awareness Day on September 21 at John Dunn House, which was attended by 70 people interested in learning more about the management and prevention of dementia.

The aim of the day was to create awareness and provide useful information on dementia. Robyn Coetzee, the south area social worker, said the day commenced with a welcome and prayer for reflection.

The schedule of events began with an address by Carol Budge as she shared her story in caregiving for her husband diagnosed with dementia.

“Her story of the emotional and physical challenges faced by family caregivers resonated deeply with the audience, creating a sense of solidarity,” said Coetzee.

Sister Ruth Birtwhistle, nursing services manager at the John Dunn House, spoke on the medical aspects of dementia. She talked about the causes of the condition and some practical advice about lifestyle changes that would help delay the condition or prevent it from setting in. Presentations delivered also focused on the therapeutic impact of owning pets and how they may be a source of comfort and companionship, which could reduce the risk of dementia setting in or comfort those who already have the condition.

DJ and co-organiser of the event Gael Meek spoke to the audience about how music and dance can also be used in the prevention of dementia and in improving the quality of life for people affected by the illness.

The attendees tested their new knowledge by taking to the dancefloor where a jovial atmosphere was created.

Coetzee hailed the event a success, pointing at enthusiastic participation from those who attended and the warm and joyful atmosphere that persisted throughout the day despite the seriousness of the topic.

Since 2018, Tafta has hosted an annual Dementia Awareness Day, led by the 4Get-Me-Not Group, a dementia caregiver support group. This year’s event continued to keep the community more informed and aware of the topic of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
