Bluff couple’s wedding transformed into winter wonderland

The Bluff couple’s spring wedding took a captivating turn when the weather warnings transformed their special day into a winter wonderland.

WHAT was supposed to be a planned spring celebration for The Bluff-based couple, Catelyn and Taine Pollard, turned into an impromptu winter wonderland celebration as their wedding went ahead amid the unexpected snowfall across KwaZulu-Natal last weekend.

Originally set for September 21, the special day was moved back one day because of the weather but eventually became something that was a key moment in the couple’s life.

The couple said, “We had avoided a July wedding because it would be so much colder and had thought September would bring a perfect, sunny day. Little did we know we were going to find ourselves in the middle of a snowstorm.”

The South African Weather Services had issued a warning the night before the wedding, however, it did not deter the bride nor the groom from proceeding with their wedding day the next day.

“Initially, we thought it would just be a light snowfall and that we had nothing to worry about. But then, by the next morning, the roads were closed, and our guests and vendors couldn’t make it through,” she said.

Catelyn and Taine decided to embrace the situation and postponed the wedding by one day to give the snow time to settle and the roads to clear.

“Waking up on September 22, there was still snow everywhere, but it made everything feel so magical. That’s when we knew – we had to go ahead no matter what. The snow had turned our venue into a winter wonderland. We accepted that not everyone may make it, but we wanted to get married,” she said.

Catelyn said she didn’t believe any bride in South Africa could dream of a white wedding like this. “It was really a wedding that you would see in some Disney fairy tale. It is so extremely rare to have snow on your wedding day, and I feel so lucky it happened to us,” she said.

She added that their special day was a once-in-a-lifetime moment they will cherish forever.
