Increase in vehicle theft – police warn car owners

The cars are stolen at shopping malls, church premises and residential areas in Merebank and surrounding areas.

POLICE in Wentworth are warning all car owners about the increasing number of motor-vehicle thefts in Merebank and its surroundings.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede said the shockingly high number of thefts of vehicles emerged during their recent crime-analysis meeting.

“The vehicles that are targeted are sedans which are being stolen at shopping malls. The crime is also committed outside driveways in residential areas and sometimes at church premises.

“These thefts occurred sporadically, but police would like to urge car owners to be vigilant and to ensure that their vehicles are secured properly when parking in malls, churches, sports fields or at any entertainment place,” said Gumede.

The police have also reported an increase in vehicle wheel-cap thefts.

The spokesperson for PT Alarms, Dhevan Govindasamy, said their officers have received reports about the theft of motor vehicles in the area.

Tips to curb motor vehicle theft:
  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit place or area, not in a dark area.
  • Activate your alarm system and check the doors before leaving your vehicle when going shopping or elsewhere.
  • Ensure that valuable items, such as cellphones, laptops, hand cameras, earrings, necklaces and handbags, are not left visible in your vehicle.
  • Approach your vehicle with caution at all times. Should you suspect something, call the police for assistance or security companies in your area.

To report crime, call Wentworth Police on 031 451 6240/6241/6242 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
