St Mary’s Primary learners celebrate Character Day with classics

ST MARY’s Primary School celebrated World Literacy Week by hosting a Character Day bringing favourite nursery rhymes to life on September 12.

Learners across all grades dressed as popular nursery rhyme characters and presented the school as a storybook that came alive.

Teacher Sandra Govender said that Character Day was to foster a love for reading and literacy among the learners. “Literacy skills include reading and writing and, most importantly, understanding what you are reading. It is a fundamental skill that empowers you to improve your quality of life as you are able to engage more actively with society,” she said.

Each grade was tasked with putting on a mini-musical that dramatised some popular nursery rhymes, including Wheels on the Bus and Little Miss Muffet.

Deputy principal Ramesh Singh said the event was organised with the aim of revitalising a culture of reading. “These days, children are not as eager to read like we used to be when we were in school. We wanted to rekindle that interest, hence we held this character day. We hoped that, in the process of preparation and interaction with the stories, learners would become more interested in reading,” he said.

No winner was officially crowned, but the highlight of the day was the hard work of the learners. Singh congratulated the learners and teachers for putting in the work to make the Character Day a success.

“The children really showed off their costumes, and the teachers went above and beyond to organise the mini-productions that brought the fun element to the day. It was truly an outstanding event,” he added.
