JUST IN: Alleged metro cop killer shot dead in Umlazi
The suspect was shot during a shoot-out with the police in the Q-section in Umlazi. A police officer and a child were injured.
POLICE have shot and killed a man believed to be among the four suspects who allegedly shot and killed Metro Police Superintendent Errol Ogle.
The suspect, whose name has not been released by the police, was shot dead during a gun battle with the police in Umlazi this morning (September 19).

A police officer and an 11-year-old girl were injured when the suspect opened fire on the police.
According to the police, the Durban Metro Police Trio Crimes Unit was acting on information received about the suspect in the Q-section.
Police retaliate
The spokesperson for metro police, Colonel Boyse Zungu, said the alleged cop killer shot first at the police, and the members retaliated.
“I can confirm the incident where an alleged cop killer was shot dead by the police during a gunfight in Umlazi. Officers from Durban Metro Police and the Special Operate Directorate traced the man to the Q-section in Umlazi. He allegedly tried to resist arrest by opening fire on the police officers, hitting one in the chest. Fortunately, the police officer was saved by his bullet-resistant vest, but he sustained injuries when he fell. An 11-year-old girl was also grazed by a bullet on her arm when the suspect started shooting. Both have been taken to hospital,” said Zungu.
Superintendent Ogle (52), a Wentworth resident, was shot and killed on July 20 when he stopped a truck that was driving counter-traffic on the Hans Dettman Highway near an off-ramp in Pinetown.
Following his murder, three men were arrested and appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on September 5. The three accused, Mlungisi Phakamani Mpanza (37), Mzomuhle Lawrence Gamede (24) and Sabelo Mncube (42) are facing charges of murder, kidnapping and two counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances.
