Learners speak up on Women’s history [Video]

Grade Seven learners from various schools in Merebank recognised inspiring women in history with a speech contest.

THE Merebank Book Project celebrated Women’s Month with a successful speech contest for Grade 7 learners from six primary schools in Merebank on August 22. The event was aimed to raise awareness and celebrate the contributions of women who have made significant impacts on the world.

Rules and requirements

Harsha Juggernath, a member of the school committee, expressed her pride in the event’s success. “This speech contest was a meaningful awareness initiative. The learners approached the topics with enthusiasm and demonstrated a profound understanding of the vital roles women play in our society,” she stated.

Participants were required to deliver a prepared speech on the theme, ‘A woman who has impacted on making the world a better place,’ followed by an impromptu speech on ‘Lessons that I learnt from the women in my life’. The contestants displayed impressive research and speaking skills, tackling the challenge with vigour.

  1. Deepika Singh from Parsee Rustomjee Primary School Florence Nightingale.
  2. Kayuri Mudali from St Mary’s Primary School – Malala Yousafzai.
  3. Latlukha Madyantyi from Junagarth Primary School –  Dr Pregs Govender.

Other commendable participants included Ongezwa Mgandela from Alipore Primary School, Pauline Nyniywa from Settlers Primary School, and Giselle Govender from Nizam Road Primary School.

Juggernath acknowledged the hard work of everyone involved, saying, “We extend our gratitude to the principals of all participating schools, the dedicated teachers who coached the learners and those who sponsored prizes and offered their support.”

The event’s success was further bolstered by the expertise of adjudicators, Suren Ganapathie, Irene Govender and Usha Juggernath, who provided valuable feedback to the contestants.

The speech contest not only honoured the remarkable achievements of women but also inspired the young learners of Merebank to recognise and celebrate the powerful influence of women in society.
