Witnesses sought in Merebank food outlet car crash

Anyone with information or who witnessed the accident is urged to come forward to help with the ongoing investigation.

POLICE in Wentworth are appealing to the public for information that may assist detectives in a matter involving a driver who was involved in an accident that left one employee from a food outlet in Merebank and one pedestrian injured on August 27.

Police spokesperson for Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbuso Gumede said the police are investigating a case of drunken driving, reckless and negligent driving, and malicious damage to property after a bakkie driver crashed into the wall and food outlet in Merebank.

Gumede said the matter was reported to the police station shortly after the incident occurred.

“We are investigating a case of drunken driving, reckless and negligent driving, and malicious damage to property. Our primary concern is the well-being of those injured, and we are doing everything in our power to bring the responsible party to justice,” said Gumede.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information about the driver of the bakkie to come forward. Even the smallest detail could be crucial in our investigation,” said Gumede.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, veered off course and struck the glass doors of the food outlet. The vehicle ploughed through the entrance, injuring two workers who were caught in the path of the car.

The incident has drawn concern from the local community, highlighting issues of road safety and the need for enhanced measures to protect pedestrians and workers.

As the investigation continues, the residents of Wentworth and Merebank are left grappling with the shock of the incident.
