JUST IN: Driver crashes into wall at Merebank food outlet – two people injured

It is alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened.

A DRAMATIC accident unfolded at a food outlet in Merebank today (August 27) when a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a wall and drove over two people standing near the entrance. The first victim is a staff member of the food outlet who was found trapped under the vehicle. The second person is a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement when the accident occurred.

The incident occurred this afternoon when the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, veered off course and struck the glass doors of the food outlet.

The impact caused the vehicle to plough through the entrance, injuring two workers who were caught in the path of the car.

A pedestrian was treated for minor injuries.

Spokesperson for PT Alarms paramedics Dhevan Govindasamy said the injured workers are currently lying on the floor of the food outlet awaiting medical assistance.

Emergency services have been called to the scene and are working to provide the necessary care and will transport the victims to a hospital.

“ALS Paramedics are currently on the scene of a serious accident with entrapments on Raj Mahal Road in Merebank. Initial reports are that a vehicle ploughed into a fast-food outlet and has pinned people under the vehicle. The eThekwini Fire Department has been dispatched,” said Govindasamy.

The SUN has learned that the driver of the vehicle lost control under circumstances that are still under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened.

The food outlet has been temporarily closed as repairs are underway and the scene is secured.

The incident has drawn concern from the local community, highlighting issues of road safety and the need for enhanced measures to protect pedestrians and workers.

The condition of the injured workers is not yet known, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
