Ratepayers heed Ramaphosa’s call to stand against gender-based violence

The Bluff Ratepayers' and Residents' Association is encouraging men in The Bluff and its surrounding areas to take decisive action and demonstrate their support for victims of gender-based violence (GBV).

THE Bluff Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association has responded to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for all men in South Africa to take a stand against gender-based violence (GBV) by signing a petition.

The association is urging men in The Bluff and its surrounding areas to take bold steps and show their support for victims of GBV. This initiative aligns with the national call made by President Ramaphosa, who has been vocal about the need for men to become champions in the fight against the GBV pandemic.

In a statement, the Bluff Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association emphasised the importance of unity and proactive measures in combating GBV.

“We are calling on all men to step up and show their solidarity with victims of gender-based violence. Signing this petition is just one of the many steps we need to take to show that we do not tolerate any form of abuse,” the statement read.

Chairperson of the association Norman Gilbert said they decided to heed the call in order to change the mindset of men at the grassroots level. He said the association aims to raise awareness about GBV and educate men on how they can contribute to ending this crisis.

Ramaphosa’s appeal made during his State of the Nation Address 2024 comes at a time when South Africa is grappling with high levels of violence against women and children. By calling on men to take a stand, the president hopes to foster a culture of respect and equality that will help eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms.

The association’s petition is seen as a step towards making this vision a reality as it mobilises the community to actively participate in creating a safer environment for everyone.

The association’s initiative has been welcomed by local leaders and community members alike, who have praised the move as a significant step in the right direction.

The Bluff Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association continues to encourage all men in the area to sign the petition and join the movement to end gender-based violence. Together, they hope to create a safer, more inclusive community where everyone can live without fear.
