Steenhuisen supports emerging farmers on The Bluff

The Minister of Agriculture aims to empower local communities to generate their own employment opportunities, offering crucial support to those out of work and driving economic growth from the grassroots level.

IN a bold move to tackle unemployment and poverty, the new Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has pledged to make poverty alleviation a top priority. With a focus on empowering local communities, Steenhuisen’s plan aims to foster job creation from within, providing a lifeline to unemployed residents and sparking economic growth from the ground up.

This was highlighted during his recent visit to The Bluff, where he met with a group of emerging farmers who own the Tara Road Community Garden.

His visit included the donation of a JoJo water tank and essential gardening equipment to support the burgeoning women-led farming initiative. The Tara Road Community Garden, spearheaded by a group of enterprising women, aims to foster job creation and self-sufficiency in their area.

In a significant boost to local agriculture and community development, the initiative is designed to combat unemployment and provide fresh produce to the community, addressing food insecurity in a country where millions face hunger daily.

Steenhuisen was joined by a notable delegation, including provincial chairperson Dean Macpherson MP; DA national spokesperson Karabo Khakhau MP; Deputy Speaker in the KZN Legislature Mmabatho Tembe; Durban Central Constituency Head Dianne Kohler Barnard MP, and Ward 66 Councillor Zoë Solomon. He emphasised the importance of such community-driven projects.

“There is no more profound contribution that a community member can make in a country where millions go to bed hungry every day,” said Steenhuisen.

He further expressed his support by stating, “The DA is honouring this altruistic, women-led initiative by providing a second JoJo water tank, essential tools and equipment, and trays of seedlings to the community garden.”

Steenhuisen’s visit was part of the Women’s Month celebrations in South Africa, a time dedicated to recognising the vital role women play in their communities.

He commended the emerging farmers for their initiative and the positive impact it will have on job creation and local economic development.

The donation and visit underscore a commitment to supporting grassroots projects that empower individuals and contribute to broader social and economic goals.

The Tara Road Community Garden now stands as a testament to the power of community action and the vital role of women in shaping a better future.

Co-founder of the project, Liziwe Mkhulisi, welcomed the donation and said it will go a long way in helping them achieve their goals as many people are being fed by the organisation.
