The event was organised at the request of students from the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).

The session focused on key issues such as gender-based violence (GBV), bullying and other crimes pertinent to the students’ daily lives. The interactive workshop provided an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of legal matters and the consequences of criminal activities.

Sergeant Noma Mnguni for the Montclair Police Station said, “Approximately 150 students participated in the session. They engaged actively, posing numerous questions that reflected a keen interest in understanding the law and its implications. In addition to discussing the legal aspects of crime, the students were advised on maintaining a peaceful environment in their residential area, particularly emphasising the prohibition of excessive noise and alcohol consumption on the premises.”

The engagement proved fruitful, with students expressing their appreciation for the informative session. In a bid to enhance ongoing communication and support, a group WhatsApp chat was established between the students and the Social Crime Prevention Unit.

Mnguni added, “This platform will facilitate the reporting of any crime-related concerns and further educational interactions.

“The event underscores a growing commitment to community safety and the empowerment of young individuals in understanding their rights and responsibilities.”
