According to family members, Robertson was knocked down by a car that was speeding, causing the driver to lose control and veer off the road. The car hit Robertson, who was standing near the traffic lights, before crashing into a fence and another vehicle.

Robertson’s aunt, Nishi Lalbehary, described him as a hardworking man and the primary breadwinner for his family.

She revealed that after losing his job, he had taken to selling vegetables and small items to support his family. However, due to deteriorating conditions, he had recently been reduced to begging on the streets.

“The incident has left us with many unanswered questions. Despite the driver being at the scene when we arrived, the police allowed him to leave without any apparent reason,” said Lalbehary.

“My father had just had a brief meeting with his sister before the accident occurred. He was a humble person who always helped his family. The person responsible for his death must face justice for his negligence. We are worried because the police have not provided us with any updates. We need answers.”

Spokesperson for the Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbusu Gumede confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of the collision.

“Upon arrival, our members observed that PT Alarms Ambulance Services and other security companies were already present. The white private vehicle involved was found damaged, having crashed into a concrete wall and a fence. The victim was found on the ground with severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

“The police are conducting an investigation into the incident, which includes charges of culpable homicide and damage to property, to determine the cause of the accident.

“The suspect was brought to the police station by a detective. The case will be referred to a senior public prosecutor for a decision regarding this incident. Whenever cases of this nature occur, the police detective investigates the case, takes statements and presents the case to court for a decision,” Gumede added.
