Empowering workshop closes off men’s mental health month

The eThekwini South Youth in Business closed off men’s mental health month with an empowering talk that has allowed men in the community to become more vocal on their issues.

ETHEKWINI South Youth in Business (ESYIB) hosted a men’s mental health intervention programme in Wentworth. The event addressed crucial issues related to men’s mental health, substance abuse, and gender-based violence (GBV).

Celeste King, chairperson of ESYIB, stressed the importance of the event, saying, “Our goal was to empower young men and boys to understand their mental state and behaviour. This understanding is essential for tackling substance abuse and the resulting social problems.”

The programme covered a range of critical topics, including the definition of mental health and its connection to substance abuse, factors that trigger men leading to GBV, the roots of GBV, and the difficulties men face in expressing their mental health. Attendees participated in meaningful discussions, exploring these complex issues and seeking solutions.

King remarked on the event’s success, stating, “The programme was planned as a one-hour session but extended to three hours due to the enthusiastic participation. The turnout was impressive, highlighting the issue of youth unemployment and the lack of opportunities.”

The men’s mental health intervention programme provided a platform for young men to openly discuss their mental health challenges and seek support. The extended duration of the event underscores the urgent need for such initiatives in the community.
