Jodie Gopal: Petition calls for justice

The Gopal family claims that the police failed to gather crucial evidence at the scene and take statements from witnesses. Jodie Gopal was shot and killed outside his home in what the family believes was a mistaken-identity shooting of a known drug runner in the Merebank area.

IT’S been two months since the death of Merebank resident Jodie Gopal, and his family’s grief has been compounded by frustration with the police investigation.

The family alleges that crucial evidence, including scattered cartridges at the crime scene, was overlooked by detectives from the Wentworth Police Station on the day of the incident.

Josephine Gopal, sister of the deceased, launched a petition, Justice for Jodie, aimed at inspiring residents disillusioned with the justice system to voice their concerns.

“I am starting this petition in the hope that more citizens, weary of unresolved homicides, tired of residing in a nation where law enforcement colludes with criminals, will join me,” she said.

She vividly recounted how her brother, holding his two-year-old daughter, fell victim to a ruthless assassination.

“He was standing outside his home, engaged in conversation with our father. Suddenly, two gunshots rang out, followed by three more, and Jodie’s daughter’s piercing screams filled the air,” said Gopal.

She claims that the police failed to secure the crime scene, gather evidence or even interview witnesses.

The family’s petition calls for justice not only for Jodie but also for all victims of unresolved crimes in Merebank.

“My father found two cartridges at the scene and gave them to the police. The investigating officer came two weeks later and took a statement from my elder brother, who was outside with Jodie when the shooting took place. When my father asked to give his statement (as he was also outside during the shooting), the officer responded that he was tired and would come back tomorrow. To date, he has not taken a statement.”

The incident was tied to the alleged drug activity in the area, with Jodie tragically mistaken for a known drug runner.

The petition urges Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and KZN Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to address systemic failures and provide closure to families shattered by violent crime.

Police spokesperson for Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbuso Gumede said, “The scene was cordoned off by Vispol officers, and evidence was collected. The docket was assigned to a detective officer for further investigation, which is underway. The sensitivity of this case wouldn’t allow the members of the community to have more information about this case.”
