Beanie Project continues to thrive thanks to community support

The continuation of the Beanie Project by the Brighton Beach Police Station has resulted in 660 beanies being donated in one day.

THE Beanie Project, initially intended as a short-term outreach effort, will continue due to the community’s overwhelming response.

Captain Louise le Roux, the communications officer at Brighton Beach Police Station, shared her excitement about the project’s success. She mentioned that the Beanie Project was designed as a community-driven initiative within the Brighton Beach policing area.

“The project’s response has been extraordinary, with beanie enthusiasts from various nearby communities rallying to support vulnerable children. Generous donors provided both wool and purchased beanies, motivating knitters and crocheters to contribute their beautiful creations,” said Le Roux.

Thanks to this collective effort, 922 beanies were distributed during the first three phases of the Beanie Project. Even though the project was initially set to end, the continuous influx of donations has prompted its extension.

On July 24, the Beanie Project distributed knitted items to several Bluff-based NPOs.

“Bluff Assist received 210 beanies for their community outreach initiatives supporting vulnerable groups. Children’s sanctuaries, Shepherd’s Keep and Journey of Hope – Baby Home, were each given 45 baby beanies and packs of newborn diapers. The Wentworth-based Victim Friendly Centre received 210 beanies to support their winter outreach for vulnerable groups. Additionally, Wentworth Hospital was provided with a second consignment of 150 newborn baby beanies,” Le Roux reported.

She added that the Beanie Project exemplifies humanity, solidarity, spirit, compassion, respect and dignity towards society’s vulnerable groups, especially children and the elderly.

Elderly community members had the chance to highlight their importance by participating in this initiative.

As these heartfelt contributions keep coming, the Beanie Project will continue to accept and distribute them, ensuring every beanie finds a home.
