The day commenced with the aroma of delicious, freshly prepared meals filling the air as community members gathered to partake in a feast.

The event featured a generous distribution of essential items. The sight of young future leaders eagerly participating and lending a hand in organising these items was a testament to the community’s collective effort to make Mandela Day a success.

Coordinator of the Victim Friendly Centre Jenny Gomes said, “It’s truly wonderful to see the community come together in this way. Our team was thrilled to be a part of such a special occasion and to be able to give back to the community in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.”

Throughout the event, there was a palpable sense of joy and camaraderie among the attendees. Children played with the new toys, families picked out clothes and shoes, and everyone enjoyed the shared meal, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere.

Mandela Day is observed on July 18 each year as it commemorates the late Nelson Mandela’s enduring contributions to the fight for equality and justice. This day is marked by a call to action for individuals and communities to dedicate 67 minutes to service – reflecting Mandela’s own 67 years of activism.

The Wentworth Victim Friendly Team’s dedication to making this day special underscored the profound impact of Mandela’s legacy, inspiring all those present to reflect on the values of peace, unity and service.

Gomes added, “We hope that the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s vision for a better world continues to inspire us all.”
