The event was aimed to foster a love for classical music and provide a hands-on learning experience, and it was a resounding success.

Michelle Killian, the school’s marketer, expressed her enthusiasm about the visit. “From Grade RR to Grade 12, learners had the unique opportunity to learn about each instrument, its name and its sound as the orchestra’s musicians introduced their instruments individually, demonstrating their sounds and roles within the ensemble,” she said.

The event was interactive and engaging, with learners moving to the music and even participating in conducting. Killian shared, “Two learners were chosen to take the conductor’s podium, leading the orchestra in a piece from the movie Star Trek, which was amazing.”

She added that the children thoroughly enjoyed it, with some even asking if they could have their own music day to bring musical instruments and show their classmates. The learners’ enthusiasm was palpable, reflecting the positive impact of the orchestra’s visit.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, consisting of 35 musicians and three crew members, delivered a performance that highlighted the diverse personalities and talents of its members. Conductor Charl van der Merwe mentioned that they visit schools throughout KZN to introduce children to music and demonstrate how different instruments can come together to create a harmonious sound.

Kelrae Ryan, a learner at BCA, said, “The orchestra was very nice, and they played very well, putting all their talents together. I would love for them to perform again.”

Qai Prinsloo, another learner, expressed his appreciation for the orchestra’s performance: “I love classical music. The aesthetic of the music reminded me so much of ballets.”

The visit by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra not only entertained but also educated the learners.
