Man found dead under bridge in Merebank

The body of a 30-year-old man was found underneath a bridge on Basil February Road in Merebank. It is uncertain what the circumstances were leading up to the man’s death.

IN the early morning of Monday, July 15, a tragic discovery was made under the bridge along Basil February Road in Merebank. A 30-year-old male was found lying motionless with severe head and facial injuries.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the spokesperson at Wentworth Police Station, reported that officers from Vispol CSC responded promptly to the scene after receiving an alert about the male lying under the bridge. “Upon arrival, the officers observed the man, who was wearing a maroon tracksuit, lying on the side of the pavement. The KZN ambulance services personnel, already present at the scene, declared the man deceased,” said Gumede.

Detectives from Wentworth police arrived at the scene to collect all necessary information and evidence to conduct a thorough investigation. The deceased’s body was subsequently transported to the Pinetown Government Mortuary.

Captain Carmen Rhymes, the eThekwini district police spokesperson, confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened and is currently under investigation. The exact cause of death remains unknown at this stage. However, a witness claimed to have seen the deceased falling from the top of the bridge onto the road below, suggesting a potential fall as the cause of the fatal injuries.

The Wentworth police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information related to it to come forward. Witnesses are urged to contact Detective Warrant Officer J Thompson during office hours at 031 451 6214. Alternatively, they can reach out to Crimestop at 086 001 0111.
