Drugs and firearm recovered during joint police operation

The arrest took place during a focused patrol aimed at curbing crime in the area.

A ROUTINE police foot patrol in Wentworth led to a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime early on July 12. According to a police report, the Vispol B Relief members, attached to the Wentworth Police Station, were conducting a stop-and-search operation along Weist Road flats when they arrested a man who was later found to be in possession of drugs and a firearm.

The arrest took place during a focused patrol aimed at curbing crime in the area.

Police spokesperson for Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbuso Gumede said, “The police found a Norinco 9mm firearm concealed in the suspect’s waistband, along with eight live rounds of ammunition. The suspect was also carrying a black Nike sling bag, which contained 92 capsules of heroin, several pieces of rock cocaine and six Mandrax tablets.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released until he appears in court, was arrested and transported to the Wentworth SAPS station.

He is facing multiple charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of rock cocaine, heroin and Mandrax.

“The firearm will be sent to a ballistics laboratory to determine if it has been used in other criminal activities, either in Wentworth or beyond.

Joining the operation were Metro K9 unit members and private security companies.

The Station Commander for Wentworth Police Station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, praised the efforts of the Vispol B Relief team for their swift response in arresting the suspect.

“The recovery of this firearm and the arrest of the suspect is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our officers. Their vigilance has potentially prevented a serious crime in our community,” said Mtshali.

Gumede said the recent arrest and recovery of the firearm and drugs represent a notable victory for the Wentworth police in their ongoing efforts to maintain public safety.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court soon, where the legal proceedings will determine the next steps in addressing the charges against him.
