Multi-disciplinary operations yield success in Wentworth

The operation aims to curb escalating crime in the community. Law enforcement officials conducted stop-and-search operations and also targeted illegal shebeens.

THE Wentworth police, in collaboration with the National Public Order Policing Unit, launched a comprehensive operation in the Merewent precinct over the weekend (June 29 and 30). This operation, aimed at curbing shootings and drug activities, has shown promising results in recent weeks.

The deployment of multiple units in the area has significantly enhanced visibility and safety for residents.

According to reports from Wentworth police, several successful arrests have been made, including individuals charged and convicted of serious crimes such as murder and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Station commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali said, “We are committed to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of our communities. The strategic planning and implementation of this operation have proven effective, resulting in tangible outcomes.”

During the operation, officers focused on conducting stop-and-search operations targeting dangerous weapons and firearms used in violent crimes and armed robberies. Illegal shebeens and drug dens were also targeted, leading to the confiscation of alcohol, illegal substances and the arrest of suspects awaiting trial.

Colonel Mtshali emphasised the importance of community involvement in maintaining law and order.

“We urge residents to report any criminal activities and utilise the Crime Stop number for anonymity,” he added, highlighting the community’s pivotal role in combating crime.

He said the ongoing operation signifies the police’s unwavering commitment to upholding the constitution of the Republic of South Africa and safeguarding its citizens.

Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to foster a safer environment for all.
