Stable support: Saddle up to help Yellowwood Park Stables

The Yellowwood Park Stables has been a cornerstone of the Yellowwood Park community since its inception, offering a plethora of activities for everyone to enjoy. The stables now call on the community to assist in them keeping and maintaining their special spot.

SINCE its establishment in 1969, Yellowwood Park Stables has become a beloved fixture in the local equestrian community. This non-profit organisation, initially started as a livery yard and gymkhana club, was made possible through a generous land donation from Kenneth Stainbank of the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve.

Today, Yellowwood Park Stables continues its mission to provide affordable access to horse riding and equestrian activities for the surrounding community. Caryn Ferriere, a committed yard member since 1994 and the current yard secretary, reflects on the stables’ lasting impact. “The Yellowwood Park Stables has always been about more than just horses. It’s about community, education and offering a space where people from all walks of life can experience the joy of equestrian activities,” she said.

Since becoming a non-profit organisation in 2015, Yellowwood Park Stables has remained dedicated to making horse riding accessible. The stables now function exclusively as a livery yard, providing stabling services for horse owners. Ferriere explains, “Our monthly costs are based on the exact figures required to care for our horses, making our livery affordable and often cheaper than privately owned establishments elsewhere.”

While the stables do not operate a formal riding school, private riding lessons are available through some horse owners. These lessons are advertised on the stables’ website and social media pages. The community spirit of the stables is also evident in their various fundraising activities, such as flea markets, fun days, pony camps, pony-ride mornings and small equestrian shows.

Maintaining the stables, which are situated on municipal land, relies heavily on funds and donations. Ferriere notes, “We are solely responsible for the upkeep of the property and all its structures. Donations and funds are essential for buying supplies, hiring contractors for repairs and compensating our grooms for additional maintenance work.” The stables appreciate donations of materials like paint, timber poles, concrete, fencing and tools, as well as monetary contributions. Items for raffles and auctions are also welcomed to help raise additional funds.

Although direct physical assistance is not feasible due to the unpredictable nature of the horses and their private ownership, the stables encourage public visits. Ferriere advises, “Afternoons and weekends are the best times to visit, and we advise visitors to be careful around the horses if no horse owners or grooms are present.”
