This essential community resource provides a safe and engaging environment where children can enjoy various free activities, such as cycling and skateboarding, without needing their own equipment.

Each week, the park positively impacts around 200 children through its programmes. Jean Choudree, the park’s coordinator and manager, emphasised its mission: “Our goal is to build a united community, foster new friendships, and keep youngsters engaged and out of trouble.”

The initiative was launched by Shaun Peschl, a former South African champion cyclist and businessman, who established the Go Durban Cycling Academy with the help of German sponsors. The project also received backing from the eThekwini Transport Association and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, enabling the construction of key facilities, including workshops, a kitchen, a classroom and ablution amenities.

The park features a community workshop offering discounted bicycle repair services, in addition to the academy’s own workshop. It also provides tutoring in maths and English and adult skills development programmes.

However, Choudree highlighted the pressing need for donations due to a recent decline in funding affecting their programmes. “We are appealing for bikes, whether old, new, or broken, as we use them for repair projects where children learn to rebuild them into proper racing bikes for competitions,” she explained.

She also emphasised the importance of meal provision for the children, a crucial support element. “We used to provide meals three days a week during maths and English classes. The children received energy bars and juices, but now, funding for meals is uncertain,” Choudree noted.

Coach Sydell Wilson remarked that during school holidays, the park is bustling with children from early morning until late afternoon. “They see this park as a safe haven from the social challenges in the community,” said Wilson.
