Locked in for pawsitive action

Yellowwood Park’s Rebecca Koszulinski took a step of faith again, agreeing to be locked up in a dog box as part of a fundraising initiative of the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

REBECCA Koszulinski, an inspiring eight-year-old from Yellowwood Park, took part in the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s 10th annual Dog Box Challenge on May 24.

With the support and guidance of her mother, Elaine Koszulinski, Rebecca – affectionately called Becca – demonstrated both heartfelt dedication and effective fundraising skills.

Becca was drawn to support the SPCA and specifically the Dog Box Challenge because it allowed her to engage directly with the cause. “She can spread awareness for weeks in advance while we start raising our funds, see the actual results of her fundraising and meet and fall in love with every single animal there,” Elaine explained. “She reassures them, saying, ‘Don’t worry, we are doing something to help you all.'”

The challenge involves participants spending time in a kennel to experience what the animals do, providing an enlightening and exciting experience for Becca. “Being in the cage is both thrilling and eye-opening for her. Explaining that this cage is the dogs’ current home saddens her deeply. Despite having comfort, warmth, food, water and exercise, it doesn’t compare to being cuddled up next to a human family.”

Becca was willing to spend the night in the cage but expressed that she wouldn’t want to live there, highlighting the harsh reality faced by many animals.

Despite the event’s serious nature, the atmosphere during the Dog Box Challenge was positive and uplifting. Participants enjoyed the company of supportive cage mates, played games, created mosaics to be displayed on the SPCA wall and formed new friendships. The event also included entertainment with food stalls, live music and social activities for participants and their supporters.

Elaine initially had reservations about Becca’s participation, concerned it might be too overwhelming for such a young child. However, Becca’s compassion and determination shone brightly.

“When it comes to animals, I should have known better that my Becca would want to take on the challenge to help them. She is extremely kind-hearted and empathetic. At eight years old, she is more aware than ever of the sad side of rescue and animal welfare,” said Elaine.
