Cancer awareness workshop ignites renewed hope [Video]

Various topics, from breast cancer awareness to nutrition and caregiving for cancer patients, were covered during the workshop.

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) took proactive measures to address health concerns in the community by hosting a Cancer Awareness Workshop at the Merebank Community Centre on May 10.

Led by SDCEA member Desiree Bishops, the workshop aimed to raise awareness about the high rates of cancer and asthma in the South Durban area, largely linked to environmental pollution.

Bishops emphasised the workshop’s importance as a platform for education and empowerment, stressing the urgent need to address the alarming prevalence of cancer and asthma affecting residents. The event was a collaborative effort involving five different organisations, including the Cancer Awareness Group of Wentworth and Merebank.

Attendees learned about healthcare courses offered by Mediskills Healthcare Academy and about nutrition and caregiving for cancer patients among other topics discussed at the workshop.

“We believe that knowledge is power,” Bishops emphasised, highlighting the importance of providing individuals with information to make informed decisions about their health. Looking ahead, Bishops confirmed SDCEA’s commitment to organising more Cancer and Asthma Awareness workshops in the future.

The workshop featured inspiring testimonies from individuals who had successfully battled cancer, underscoring the importance of support systems in overcoming the challenges posed by the illness.

Bishops encouraged those battling cancer to join their support group or seek assistance from similar organisations, inviting interested individuals to reach out to the SDCEA office for further information.

Efforts to address environmental concerns, and promote continued health and well-being, with initiatives like these play a crucial role in driving positive change within the community.
