Life in the Park project aims to breathe new life into Merebank park

Residents and community members work hand-in-hand to restore Sialkot Park and transform it into a sanctuary for Merebank residents.

IN an effort to reclaim the once vibrant Sialkot Park from the grip of criminal elements, community advocate Dr Satchu Annamalai has taken the helm of the Life in the Park initiative.

The goal of the project is to revive the park’s former allure and transform it into a sanctuary for local residents.

Dr Annamalai pointed out: “Years of neglect by municipal authorities have allowed parks, walkways and sports grounds in various neighbourhoods to deteriorate, [causing them to become] more of a burden than a benefit.”

Highlighting the necessity of restoring green spaces, particularly in areas like Merebank plagued by industrial pollution, Dr Annamalai envisions that rejuvenating parks such as Sialkot Park will not only provide recreational outlets but also foster a safer community environment.

“Our immediate aim is to draw residents back to the park through engaging events like concerts, family fun days and health seminars,” Dr Annamalai explained.

At the forefront of this endeavour is the Mother’s Day Dinner and Dance, which was held at the Marigold Banquet Hall on May 11. Dr Annamalai revealed that proceeds from the event would kickstart Sialkot Park’s restoration, with a fundraising target set at R20 000.

The occasion welcomed Professor Brij Maharaj as the guest of honor, who spoke on the significance of parks and green spaces within communities. Additionally, Mariam Bassa, famed for her roles in the Kandasamy film series, threw her weight behind the restoration initiative.

For those eager to contribute or volunteer, Dr Annamalai has launched Friends of the Park, a community collective dedicated to orchestrate programmes and activities aimed at rekindling residents’ bond with their green havens.
