Operation Good Hope: Montclair mobilises for change

Operation Good Hope, a municipality initiative, has mobilised teams to enforce by-laws, clean areas, effect waste removal and conduct repairs and maintenance of infrastructure, among other things, in Ward 64, and will be moving on to other South Durban suburbs.

OPERATION Good Hope sprang into action to address various community concerns in Montclair and its surrounds last week.

With a concerted effort from officials and residents alike, the initiative yielded positive results, transforming neighbourhoods and fostering a renewed sense of hope.

The collaborative approach led to improved infrastructure, cleaner streets and enhanced community engagement – setting a promising precedent for future endeavours in the region.

Operation Good Hope was also conducted in Woodlands in Ward 64. The operation aims to fast-track service-delivery backlogs in the city. Teams were in the area fumigating to ensure vector control.

According to a statement from eThekwini Municipality, the objective of the operation is to fast-track service-delivery challenges and encourage residents to keep their areas free of litter. It also injects a spirit of patriotism into the members of the public.

The teams also focused on enforcement of the by-laws, cleaning and waste removal, as well as conducting repairs and maintenance of infrastructure. Social challenges arising from homelessness were also on the agenda of the task team.

Service-delivery issues that were addressed in the sections visited were the issue of the homeless, by-law enforcement, conducting building inspections, fixing leaking water pipes, removing illegal electricity connections, road markings, waste collection and repairing streetlights.

Operation Good Hope is the municipality’s initiative aimed at accelerating service-delivery programmes focused on integrated and multi-disciplinary operations that have a direct and immediate impact on the quality of lives of residents in various wards.

The municipality urged the community to report service-delivery issues in their areas and enforce business compliance with the municipality’s by-laws to protect residents from buying rotten food and fake or stolen goods.

The municipality has, in recent weeks, been enforcing by-laws through the Mother of All Clean-Ups campaign and Operation Good Hope. This has seen shop owners fined and arrested for violating health and safety compliance, including operating without a business licence, unsafe and unhygienic working conditions and selling expired food, among others.

The Area Based Management South Durban Basin, together with the multi-disciplinary Operation Good Hope team, has recently visited Winchelsea Avenue on The Bluff to inspect business compliance. The operation is expected to be rolled out in other suburbs, as well, in a bid to speed up service delivery issues.
