Blue Bundu Brigade calls on community for support of sterilisation drive

The animal rescue organisation has an urgent need for grass to be planted in the area housing the dogs, which is currently comprised of sand and pavement. The scorching sun poses risks to the paws of the dogs.

BLUE Bundu Brigade, an animal shelter based in Durban, has launched a significant initiative to sterilise their male dogs, following the success of a previous campaign targeting female canines.

Karen Janisch, the founder of Blue Bundu Brigade, expressed that this proactive measure aims to address overpopulation issues and foster responsible pet ownership within the community.

With foster homes spread across Durban, including on The Bluff, Blue Bundu Brigade has been tirelessly dedicated to ensuring the well-being of their furry residents. However, the organisation faces financial constraints, particularly in covering the veterinary expenses for sterilisation procedures and other essential costs. Consequently, they are actively seeking sponsorships to support this critical aspect of animal welfare.

Janisch emphasised the importance of their ongoing efforts, stating, “Sterilisation plays a pivotal role in controlling the stray animal population and promoting healthier lives for our dogs. By sterilising your animals, it adds a few more years to your pet’s life.”

Apart from financial assistance for sterilisation, the shelter also requires essential supplies such as food. Additionally, the foster home on The Bluff confronts a pressing issue with its terrain. Francina du Randt, The Bluff foster mom, emphasised the urgent need to plant grass in the area housing the dogs, which is currently comprised of sand and pavement.

“The harsh Durban sun poses risks to the paws of the dogs. The pavement and sand often become too hot for the dogs to walk on, which is why we need to urgently plant grass in place of the tar for the animals’ comfort and safety,” said Du Randt.

Du Randt disclosed that she currently cares for 58 dogs and puppies. Her passion for dogs, particularly power breeds, stems from witnessing their resilience despite past abuse and neglect. “It’s heartwarming to see them trust and love again,” she expressed.

The organisation welcomes both material donations and monetary contributions dedicated to caring for their fur babies. Individuals interested in supporting Blue Bundu Brigade’s endeavours are encouraged to make donations to the organisation’s bank account: Blue Bundu Brigade Animal Rescue & Rehoming, Capitec Bank, Account number: 142 621 3679.
