Woman hijacked at gunpoint outside Montclair crèche

The suspects escaped into nearby bushes in the uMlazi area, and the vehicle was recovered.

THE police have launched a manhunt for three suspects responsible for a hijacking that happened in Montclair yesterday (March 5).

According to the ET Rapid​ Response team, the situation unfolded outside a crèche on Glanville Road at around 15:00 when armed suspects approached the victim and demanded her car keys.

According to police sources, the mother had arrived at the crèche to pick up her daughter when the incident occurred.

Managing director for ET Rapid Response Tony Lokker said their officers responded to a complaint of hijacking of a White Renault KWID in Glanville Road.

“The information was relayed to ​us by Montclair Crime Eye and Montwood CPF Forum. Members from ET Rapid Response TRT liaised with the Beami vehicle tracking company, who informed them that the hijacked vehicle’s last known location was in the uMlazi area,” said Lokker.

He said that while the members were patrolling and checking hotspot areas, they spotted a car in uMlazi.

“Upon noticing our TRT team, the suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled into nearby bushes.  An extensive search for the suspects was conducted by private security officers, SAPS and metro police, however, the suspects could, unfortunately, not be located,” said Lokker.

KZN police spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said, “The victim was suddenly approached by three unknown suspects who pointed at her with a firearm and demanded her car keys. She gave them the keys, and they drove off with her vehicle. No injuries were reported. A case of hijacking was opened at Montclair SAPS.”
