‘Attempted robbery’ victim turns into a suspect

A man who opened a case of attempted robbery at the police station had gotten into a road rage brawl with two other men and opened fire on them.

A MAN who shot and wounded one of the two victims in Kenyon Road in Montclair on February 12 has been charged for attempted murder.

Elva Marden appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (February 15). He was arrested and charged for attempted murder by the police on February 14.

Marden was travelling on Kenyon Road in Montclair when an altercation between him and the other two men broke out in an incident that reportedly stemmed from a road rage incident.

It’s alleged that the accused jumped out of his car and fired shots towards the two men. One victim, Nonkonyane Masinga, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.

According to police sources, the two brothers were travelling on Kenyon Howden Road when they noticed the driver (accused) trying to overtake their car.

A police report alleged that the accused insulted the two men, and this resulted in the exchange of words.

Montclair Police spokesperson Sergeant Noma Mnguni said the man handed himself over to the police shortly after the incident.

Mnguni said the accused told the police that the two men had tried to rob him on Kenyon Howden Road.

“He opened a case of attempted robbery at the police station. He alleged that the two men had tried to rob him. The injured man was transported to hospital for further care. He also opened a case of attempted murder,” said Mnguni.

According to police sources, both drivers were driving on Kenyon Howden Road in Montclair when a brawl ensued.

Mnguni said Montclair Police are investigating cases of attempted murder and robbery.

The recent second quarterly crime statistics for 2023/2024 financial year revealed that 290 cases of road rage incidents were reported from July to September 2023 in KwaZulu-Natal. Attempted murder cases increased to 2 599 between July and September 2023 in the province.
