Coedmore Bridge rebuild expected in 2024

Rebuilding of the Coedmore Bridge will only commence next year due to contractors closing for the festive season.

AFTER numerous and ongoing delays due to various circumstances, the rebuilding of the Coedmore Bridge can be expected to commence early next year.

Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter said the current situation is that the Letter of Award is ready, but it is awaiting the signature of the City manager, Musa Mbhele.

“Unfortunately, he has been out of the country for the last three weeks. Other than this (hopefully final) delay, everything is on track.

“Due to the delays pushing the deadline to this time of the year, with construction shutdown just a few weeks away, it is unlikely that they will move on site this year. This will, however, be confirmed after discussion with the contractor. I will update the public when new information is available,” Hegter added.

The closure of the bridge, which was completely damaged during the April 2022 floods, has caused frustrations among motorists and residents living in the vicinity, as they had been forced to incur extra costs due to increased travel time.

Among the several delays which have stopped the rebuild was that the national treasurer allocated R1.9 billion which was meant for flood relief.

Hegter said those funds had to be returned due to the City not doing the required administration. This resulted in the awarding of the tender and the rebuilding process being put on hold.
