Armed men terrorise staff during robbery

One of the victims was bound by the hands and feet with an extension cord.

FORCED to seek counselling after a traumatising robbery, staff at a store on South Coast Road are battling to sleep after armed gunmen entered the store, tied them up and assaulted them before fleeing with cash and goods.

The young men who work at the store said it was just before midday when a man posing as a customer entered the safety store. Staff member Karabo Nta (20) said, “The man asked about a few items at the counter and left without making a purchase. Moments later, he returned with two others. They each had guns, and one of them also had a large knife. They bound each of us by the hands and legs. For me, they used a long extension cord, and for the other two staff members, they made them take their shoelaces off and tied them up, too.

“They then ransacked the shop while they beat us up, demanding to know where the safe was. I have never been a victim of crime before, and I am very traumatised. I am grateful that I have minor injuries and was not shot or killed.”

South Durban community leader Yusuf Vawda, who is the spokesperson for the shop, said he was glad that no staff were badly injured during the incident and urged shop owners to beef up security in the area.

“There have been many robberies in South Coast Road in recent weeks, and this should be an eye-opener to business owners. As the festive season approaches, criminals will look for easy targets by also beginning to prey on small local businesses. Everyone needs to be more vigilant,” Vawda added.
