Community leaders and residents were afforded a platform to discuss issues affecting the communities of various wards in the south Durban area, and they engaged with representatives of eThekwini Municipality departments, together with ward councillors and ward executive members.

Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman and Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter.

The engaging community-participation programme was aimed at strengthening the communication between the municipality and residents, and was welcomed by attendees, who shared their concerns and also made suggestions as to how issues faced by residents can effectively be eradicated.

Community leaders highlighted the plight of residents and the ongoing electricity, water and sewer-related issues, as well as the dire need for more housing projects because of crammed living conditions which have already led to land-invasion problems in the Wentworth area.

The Masakhane programme came as a national campaign to encourage community members to pay for services rendered by municipalities. Over the years, due to legislative imperatives, the approach took the form of an outreach programme that promotes and strengthens communication between the municipality and citizens.
