Reconstruction of Coedmore Bridge underway

Construction of the bridge is expected to begin before the end of the month.

MOTORISTS and residents have welcomed news of the rebuilding of Coedmore Bridge and can breathe a sigh of relief after the National Treasury made funds available for work to commence.

The bridge was completely damaged during the 2022 floods, and motorists have had to take alternative routes to get to their destinations, resulting in them spending more than 45 minutes on additional driving time.

Gavin Hegter, ward 64 councillor for the area, said he was thrilled to be able to announce that the rebuilding has commenced.

“The bridge has been designed. We have only an artist’s impressions of the design so it is not the exact design.

“Authority has been granted to call for tenders for the construction. The tenders have been closed and processed. The final process is for it to be referred to the BAC (Bid Adjudication Committee) for final approval.

“There will then be a 21-day objections period. If no objections are received, the letter of award will be issued and the contractor will move on-site and start construction,” Hegter said.

Construction is expected to begin before the end of September.
