Armed robber who targeted e-hailing drivers sentenced

The accused was wanted for two cases and is now behind bars serving his sentence.

HEFTY sentences were served to two criminals due to the excellent detective skills of two officers from the Wentworth police station who ensured that they will remain behind bars for a long time.

An armed robber was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of targeting e-hailing drivers. According to Detective Sergeant Sibonelo Nzama, who secured the conviction, the suspect had attacked and robbed e-hailing drivers of their personal belongings in the Wentworth area.

Communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the accused was wanted for two cases and is now behind bars in Westville prison, serving his sentence.

In a separate case, Detective Sergeant Bhekithemba Zulu secured 12 years of imprisonment for a robbery case and two years for a theft case.

“The detectives have worked tirelessly to ensure that armed robberies committed in Merewent are solved within a short space of time, by affecting the arrest and bringing the perpetrators to book,” Gumede said.

The station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, said, “We praise the detectives, as well as the detective branch commander, Lieutenant Colonel Dale Duke, for performing outstanding investigations and securing convictions on the different cases.

“These convictions will send a strong message to those who preyed on e-hailing drivers and vulnerable groups or people in our community. We urge the community to assist the police in the fight against crime.”
