WATCH: Raw sewage overflow on The Bluff sparks frustration

Sewage overflow is a recurring problem in the Fynnlands area in The Bluff, which will only be rectified when the infrastructure is replaced outside Kenmont School.

A BLUFF resident has been left fed up and despondent over the recurring issue of sewage overflowing from a manhole outside his property.

Reg Barr of Armstrong Road, situated in the Fynnlands area, said he now fears that the boundary fence to his property could soon collapse as sewage continuously gushes from the raised manhole.

“This is the 10th time that the sewage has been overflowing. Every time eThekwini Municipality unblocks the pipes, I think, finally, there is some relief, but in a matter of days, it starts up again. It is a ghastly sight as there is toilet paper and faeces in front of my home and on the verge, and it continuously runs down the road. I cannot even leave my windows open or go out into my yard as the smell is unbearable.

“However, my biggest concern is that the manhole cover is broken at the side which faces my boundary fence, so the sewage is damming against it and weakening the foundation. I fear it could collapse at any time. Who will then repair it?

“We are fed up of having to live in such conditions. We never had these problems in the past. I have lived on The Bluff for more than 20 years, and over the past couple of years, service delivery has taken a nose dive. It is extremely unfair on us residents,” he said.

Zoë Solomon, Ward 66 councillor, said there were plans to upgrade infrastructure which would aid in combating such recurring issues.
