Ogle (51) of Wentworth was shot and killed after he was unexpectedly caught in the middle of a hijacking while travelling on the M7, near the Hans Dettman off-ramp, on July 20.

He sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and died at the scene.

Ogle, who served in the Metro Police for more than two decades, was also robbed of his service firearm. The suspects allegedly then fled his marked vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Pinetown.

Lieutenant-Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, Hawks spokesperson, said the incident spurred the Hawks’ investigation, and with the assistance of Metro Police, they arrested the suspects within a short space of time.

He said one of the suspects was arrested in Durban, and a second suspect was arrested in Estcourt. The third suspect was arrested at a hostel in Umlazi.

Following his death, tributes poured in for Ogle. He was described as a God-fearing man and served his country and community with distinction. He also loved his entire family wholeheartedly.

He was also said to be a beacon of hope to many and a role model to the young boys in the Wentworth community.
