WATCH: Montclair CPF hosts crime awareness day

The event not only showcased the skills of the K9 unit but also fostered a sense of community involvement and support for law enforcement efforts.

RESIDENTS, young and old, were captivated and entertained as well as enlightened on crime and ways in which they can protect themselves at the Montclair Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) crime awareness day.

Children were thrilled to engage with firefighters from the Montclair Fire Station, who taught them about the various ways in which firefighters use different equipment to save lives.

The family-orientated event was held at the Yellowwood Park Sports Club and was supported by partners in policing.

Montclair police station commander, Colonel Trevor Small, opened the event with a welcoming address to the partners in policing and the public in attendance.

Jackie Goncalves, the Montclair CPF chairperson and project manager, thanked role-players, which included the Montclair Community in Blue, Montclair Youth Desk, Montclair Victim-Friendly Room, Montclair Police, the Brighton Beach Police Station’s communications office, the Durban Flying Squad, Durban Accident Unit and Durban Search and Rescue.

Role-players from the security industry who joined forces to ensure the success of the event were Kings Security, Blue Security, ADT Fidelity Security and Durban South Security.

Live demonstrations displayed various crime and life-threatening scenarios, and the Detector Dog Umhlatuzana K9 Unit showed attendees how ‘the apprehension of a criminal’ scenario plays out.

A narcotics detector and drug detection display had audiences engaged.

Fun and entertainment were also on the programme for young and old with food stalls and a flea market which added to a fulfilling family day.
