School’s vegetable garden benefits community

Learners of the school eagerly help with the upkeep of the vegetable garden.

LUSH, nutritious vegetables are in full bloom at Alipore Primary School’s garden, which is tended to by staff and learners and which contributes to the school’s nutrition programme and also benefits indigent families in the Merewent area.

Proud of their lush, well-maintained garden of healthy vegetables, which include spinach, cabbage, mint, coriander and bananas, learners have excitedly handled the upkeep of the garden.

Once ready for harvesting, learners can be seen lining up for their share of the fresh vegetables, while the aroma of the vegetables cooking in the school’s kitchen for the nutrition programme fills the hallways.

Vegetables are packed and sent home with learners and also donated to families in need in the area.

Principal of the school Sampson Maistry said, “We are proud of our garden and even happier that it benefits the whole community and not just our learners.

“Our support staff, teachers and learners are encouraged to tend to the garden as it is very fulfilling to see things growing. Seedlings were sponsored by Mega City Spar, and we are thrilled to commence with the next phase of our garden.

“We hope that by continuing to grow our vegetable garden, learners will realise that gardening is very easy and be encouraged to start kitchen gardens to save money and eat nutritious food,” Maistry said.

The school added pumpkin and gem squash to their garden last week and will add a soup to their nutrition programme soon.
