Home for disabled people appeals for assistance

The home provides three nutritional meals to each resident on a day-to-day basis.

THE Merewent Cheshire Home is appealing to the public and businesses to assist them with basic food items so they can continue to provide nutritional meals for their residents.

The home, which is a registered non-profit organisation and a residential facility, situated in Wentworth, provides 24-hour care to 35 adults with physical disabilities, aged between 18 and 59.

The home has been rendering services to persons with disabilities for the past 29 years.

Winnie Mkhize, manager of the home, said the home relies on a subsidy from the government which covers 50% of their operational costs.

“However, this month’s government subsidy was paid late and compromised our care and services provided to our residents to a great extent. We had to borrow money to pay salaries as staff were not going to be able to come to work if they were not paid,” she said.

Mkhize said the home provides a wide variety of services to persons with disabilities such as residential and nursing care, social work services and nutrition, among others.

“One of our major expenses is the purchasing of food, therefore donations will enable us to cut down and direct our funds towards other much-needed services aimed at improving the lives of our residents. We are running out of food as we provide three meals a day to our residents. We appreciate any form of support which will play a pivotal role in sustaining services to people with disabilities,” she said.
