This is how much an average South African spends on groceries

The statistical data from 105 countries was examined and calculated on how much money citizens of different countries spend on their groceries.

SOUTH Africa is one of the African countries that has the highest expenditure on groceries per capita.

A new report on food and spending, published by Picodi.com, disclosed that the African country with the highest expenditure on groceries is Egypt, followed by South Africa second and Kenya in third place. Pocodi.com analytic team examined the statistical data from 105 countries and calculated how much money citizens of different countries spend on their groceries.

According to the report, Egyptians spend about $114 per month, South Africans spend about $77 per month and Kenyans spend about $74 per month. “An average South African spends $77 (R1 403) monthly on groceries. The lowest grocery spending can be found in Uganda ($24 per month), Ethiopia ($20 per month), and Tanzania ($15 per month). South Africa is ranked in 50th place, with food and non-alcoholic beverages making up 21.3% of spending on goods and services,” the report states.

The highest percentage of spending on groceries can be found in Nigeria, Myanmar and Kenya – 59%, 56.6% and 56.1% respectively. Less than a tenth of spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages consumed at home can be found in countries such as the USA – 6.7%, Singapore – 8.4%, the UK – 8.7%, Ireland – 9.2% and Switzerland – 9.9%.
