Merewent Athletic Club turns 40

The club's 'Let's Walk Merewent' initiative encourages residents to join fun walks in their neighbourhoods.

CELEBRATIONS to commemorate the Merewent Athletic Club’s 40th anniversary kicked off at the Dhubri Road grounds in Merebank with an entertaining family fun day.

Attendees were engaged in fun-filled games, and residents were given the opportunity to sell items at the free stalls.

Strini Naidoo from the club said the event served to showcase the club’s commitment to the community and build lasting relationships with future sponsors, businesses and participants, like schools.

Attendees were treated to performances by drum majorettes from Collingwood Primary School and Grosvenor Girls’ High School.

Family volleyball and netball courts brought out friendly competition among family teams and school teams respectively. Chessboards were set up, sparking interest in the game among the youngsters. Thunee games (a trick-taking card game) and musical chairs entertained parents, while the tug-of-war got everyone involved and cheering.

“One of the main goals of the event was to raise awareness about health and fitness. We strongly believe in the importance of schools offering fun physical activities for children. As part of our Let’s Walk Merewent initiative, we encourage residents to start walking by organising fun walks.

“Families in each neighbourhood could walk their roads together for 30 minutes, creating opportunities to meet their neighbours and build a closer-knit community.

“We thank all role-players for their dedication to ensuring the success of the event. The team of organisers, led by Anusha Jugoo and Raymond Annamuthu, worked tirelessly to host awareness campaigns at Merebank Shopping Centre to rally support for the event.

“We also thank members of the Durban South Schools Council (DSSC), Marlon Roman, Magesh Jankey and Sherwyn Singh, as well as the deputy principal of St Mary’s, Ramesh Singh, Mahen Reddy, Trevan Soobramoney, Amanda Gcina, Yuvika Maharaj, Sathie Moodley and Aaminah Sheik.

“The help from Jordache Pillay and Sherwyn Singh from Alipore Primary School enabled us to host various sports codes and provided equipment,” added Naidoo.
