ARE you looking for something to do this weekend? Well, look no further – here’s a list of events happening in Durban and surrounds.

July 21–22

Dance festival

The Durban Dance Movement Festival will be hosting its annual dance event at the Playhouse Drama Theatre from July 21–22. Organised by the NPO, Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation, the festival is funded by the NAC PESP 4 Programme fund that promotes and creates job opportunities for artists in the country. Directed by artistic director Jarryd Watson, the festival will showcase entertaining dance performances in ballet, hip-hop, African contemporary, Bollywood, amapiano and many other styles, which reflect the diversity of arts offered in KZN. For more information on tickets, contact 082 683 9665 or visit https://www.webtickets.co.za to purchase tickets. Tickets can also be bought at any Pick ’n Pay outlets.

July 22

Bucket bomb

During the Durban FilmMart (DFM) from July 21–24, a nonviolent leaflet device or ‘bucket bomb’ will be re-created on Saturday, July 22 at 10:00 at the Amphitheatre on the beachfront. The bucket bomb celebrates one of the films in the line-up, the feature documentary London Recruits, which is produced by Barefoot Rascals, a Welsh production company, together with Durban’s Arclight Productions. The film sheds light on the 1970 struggle against the apartheid government in South Africa when Oliver Tambo hatched a daring plan to infiltrate young British activists into the country, posing as tourists. For more information about the film, go to: www.londonrecruits.com.

Tickets for adults are priced at R50 and will be available at the gates or online at www.itickets.co.za. Learners from across the region will be granted free entry.

July 22–23

Hockey Grand Finals

The Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge will take place at St Mary’s DSG on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23. Ten teams representing their regions will be participating in the exhilarating conclusion after the ten hard-fought regionals around KwaZulu-Natal were battled out earlier this year. Getting the tournament underway, defending champions Durban Girls’ College will meet travelling team Ladysmith High School in the very first game of the fixtures.
