Learners geared up to showcase skills at Special Olympics World Games

The world's largest inclusive sports event, is set to take place in Germany, from June 15 to 25.

HOPING to bring home the gold, learners from Ningizimu Special School in Montclair are geared up to compete in the 2023 Special Olympics World Games, taking place in Berlin, Germany from June 15 to 25.

The Games, which are the world’s largest inclusive sports event, will see thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete in 26 different sporting codes.

Nana Mazibuko, the school’s sports coordinator and football coach, said the school’s female football team and male basketball team were selected to represent South Africa.

Some of the basketball team players, Simphiwe Gidigidi, Mhlengi Ndlovu, Thabiso Mbhele, Thabo Radebe and Vusimuzi Ngozi.

“Our female team consists of 11 players from the senior phase and the male team consist of 10 players also from the senior phase. The learners from both teams are very excited for this opportunity as it is the first time that most of them have an opportunity to compete in a such high level sporting event. It is also their first international trip.

“As their coach, I am honoured and happy that their hard work has paid off and above all, they have proven that being a learner with special needs doesn’t limit you or what you can achieve,” she said.
