Do people really stick to their New Year’s resolutions?

Caxton Local Media asked some Durbanites whether they actually stick to their New Year’s resolutions.

THE time of the year when people make New Year’s Resolutions with the hope to better themselves has come and gone already. This is a tradition for some people, but do they really carry them out? We were curious to find out.

Caxton Local Media spoke to a few local residents, asking what their 2023 resolutions are and if they actually fulfil them. This is what they had to say:

Luandi Norris.

Luandi Norris: I always achieve my New Year’s resolutions, for example, my last year’s resolution was to lose at least 10kg, but I ended up losing 13kg in three months. This year, my resolutions are as follows: Focus on a healthy lifestyle – with a healthy lifestyle comes a healthy mindset. Appreciate the small things in life – appreciate the importance of family, and spend more time with them doing creative activities. Broaden my career by completing an Advanced Diploma Course in General Management. Celebrate my 15th work anniversary with our brand.

Anele Zondi.

Anele Zondi: I believe in being determined when making New Year’s resolutions. I often achieve most of my New Year’s resolutions. My resolutions for 2023 are: To cultivate good habits and invest my time into learning more and developing my passion. I want to continue being a good leader and an inspiration to those who look up to me. And I want to maintain my acts of kindness and dedicate my time to helping those in need, with what I have and what I can give or provide. I have always been passionate about learning how to play a few instruments, especially the piano, but I never had the guts to try. I also want to try learning a new language and travelling to somewhere I have never been.

Meshika David.

Meshika David: I am not really one for New Year’s resolutions, but this year, I find myself with a new realisation, perhaps due to the calamities that we have faced over the past three years in South Africa. My realisation for 2023 is to take a step back and give my soul a chance to catch up with my mind and body.  I intend to be more fully aware and indulgent in the magic of life’s most simple pleasures – to catch the sunrise, to just sit and watch the rain fall, to curl up with a great book, to soak up the sunshine. In the words of TS Elliot: “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice.” I simply and soulfully intend to find mine.

Phakamani Ndlovu.

Phakamani Ndlovu: My New Year’s resolutions are to continue with my men’s health ambassador campaigns work, focus on self-care for myself – to not only think of the people I am serving and forget about myself. To do walks around the yard five times in the morning as part of exercising since one can’t afford fitness centres. Enrol for the Certificate in Digital Marketing. Zukiswa Maduna.

Zukiswa Maduna: I always set New Year’s Resolutions, but sometimes I don’t achieve them all due to several reasons. This year, my aim is to focus more on my skin solutions business and my kids. I want to expand my financial goals and visit various places and meet new people who are driven by success in life.
