LISTEN: NPO removes barriers for the disabled through sport
In November, National Disability Rights Awareness Month is marked throughout the country – to address how to work towards an inclusive and accessible world for people living with disabilities.
ANNUALLY, between November 3 and December 3, South Africa marks National Disability Rights Awareness Month.
The month is about highlighting the challenges disabled people face and addressing how to work towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable world for people living with disabilities.
One organisation making their mark, and helping in removing barriers, as well as improving the quality of life of people with disabilities through concrete action, is non-profit organisation (NPO) Made For More.
General manager of Made For More Michelle White and SA Para Surf champ (kneel division) David Williams spoke to us about their involvement with the organisation.
“Our vision is to see people with disabilities included, equipped and empowered to live purpose-filled and passionate lives. Our mission is to break stigma while guiding and empowering people with disabilities to discover their abilities.
“We also do this through disability sports, mental health programmes, camps and community projects. Our sports programmes include adaptive surfing and boccia, a Paralympic sport similar to Bowls,” she explained.
White added that they have a Disability Rights Awareness fun day planned to take place on the Durban beachfront on Saturday, December 3.
