History of Rugby Championship

Each year, four teams—Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa—compete in the Rugby Championship, an international competition. Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa participated in the 1996 Tri-Nations competition, which marked the competition’s debut.

The All Blacks captured the first Tri-Nations championship by defeating the Springboks and the Wallabies at home and abroad. Since 2012, when Argentina joined the competition, the Rugby Championship has consisted of four teams.

Due to the pandemic’s effects, South Africa was forced to withdraw from the 2020 edition, which resulted in a three-team competition between Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Dates and Locations of the Matches in 2022

The Rugby Championship for this year began on August 6 at Mbombela Stadium when South Africa played host to New Zealand. Australia and Argentina met in Mendoza.

Due to the tournament’s new format, those matches were repeated seven days later when the Wallabies played the Pumas in San Juan and the Springboks faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg. The following week, the All Blacks played Argentina in Christchurch, while the Springboks traveled to Adelaide to take on Australia.

These matches were repeated on September 3 when the Wallabies played the Springboks in Sydney, and New Zealand hosted Argentina in Hamilton. The All Blacks and Wallabies squared off at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne in round five on September 15.

Two days later, the action was moved to Buenos Aires, where South Africa was playing Argentina. The final round of the 2022 Rugby Championship saw those matchups reversed as New Zealand hosted Australia at Eden Park. The tournament will conclude in Durban, with South Africa playing Argentina.

Final Thoughts

In the sixth and final round of the 2022 Rugby Championship, South Africa will host Argentina. There are many things at stake in this match; South Africa must defeat Argentina, and New Zealand must defeat Australia.

The tournament matches’ results have been so unpredictable that the reversal is possible in both games. Some players are familiar with King’s Park in Durban as the venue. 2015 saw Imhoff create history there. He accomplished a hat-trick against the Springboks, becoming the first player in history to do so.

One of the most significant victories for Los Pumas was that day’s victory over South Africa. That outcome will inspire the upcoming matches.
