WATCH: Funakoshi karate club hosts grading ceremony

The club is proud to celebrate the 56th year of practicing the style of original funakoshi karate.

THE Funakoshi Karate International South Africa – Bluff, hosted their grading ceremony with 16 students undergoing their grading during the club’s tenth year of operating in Bluff.

Watching with great pride as their children went through the grading process, parents were overwhelmed as Sensei Shaun Miln determined, with the help of a guideline from the club’s chief instructor, Sensei Birgitt Smit, if students were eligible for the grading.

“The grading is a celebration of the students achievements throughout the year. Although this is a nerve-wrecking and scary process for some of the children, we make them aware that this event is a celebration, through which hard work and determination is key. It is important to note that the student is observed in class before the grading.

“There are the younger students who get stressed during the grading and make mistakes which they usually do not make in classes, but they will at the grading and we understand. In essence, we look at every students individual overall progress, which culminates at the grading,” said Miln.
